Information about me

My entry on the Barrister Register can be viewed here.

The Legal Ombudsman's decision data website can be found here.

I am regulated by the Bar Standards Board.

Professional, licensed and direct access clients may contact me through this website or via email or telephone my clerks on 020 7404 700 or me on 07767 887344 to obtain a quote for my services.

I accept direct (aka public) and licensed access work, as well as instructions from solicitors. I am not authorised to conduct litigation as a solicitor can. While I can draft documents, advise and guide a direct client, the client will need to issue proceedings, file documents at court and serve documents on other parties themselves.

The scope of my services should be discussed with me and agreed.

A website called Legal Choices is run by the frontline legal regulators. It can be a good source of information for those looking to instruct a lawyer.

I have professional indemnity insurance cover for the legal services I supply to professional and lay clients.

I am registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO): Z4659329

Fees

My most commonly used pricing models are for:

(1) Specific hearings or pieces of work: a fixed fee

(2) Other work: hourly or daily rates

My standard fees are based around an hourly rate of £400 to £500, capped at £5,000 for the day, all plus VAT. These fees are indicative only and may vary depending on various factors. Please ask for a quotation. Factors influencing the rate will include:

(1) Complexity and nature of the work

(2) Timescales for work and the need for out-of-office hours work

(3) Claim size

(4) Location of any hearings or conferences

Typically, a fixed fee or hourly/daily rate will cover all fees. However, where there are additional costs, these will be agreed and added. Examples are likely to be:

(1) Travel costs to and from a location to cover public transport or motoring costs

(2) Hotel and subsistence costs when staying overnight to attend a hearing and/or a conference

I am VAT-registered and VAT is charged on my fees, where applicable. My VAT number is on my fee notes and receipts, and available on reasonable request.

Nature of work

The areas of practice in which I most commonly provide legal services are in land and planning matters as set out elsewhere on this website. My most commonly provided legal services are:

(1) Representation in court and other hearings

(2) Advising in conference and / or in writing

(3) Drafting documents, including pleadings, letters, witness statements and court applications

The key stages to  instructing me are likely to be:

(1) Receipt of documentation from the client

(2) Discussion with me about the fee, scope of the work and timescales

(3) Agreeing an engagement letter, signing it and payment of the fee

(4) Holding a conference in person or via video link or telephone with the client (if applicable)

(5) Drafting documentation and / or preparing for any hearing

(6) Supplying the drafted documentation to the client, the court or other side, as necessary, and attending any hearing as needed

(7) Discussion about documentation, or the outcome of any hearing

Typically, the above will be carried out over weeks or months, but timescales will vary. The factors which might influence the timescales for my services are:

(1) Complexity of the task

(2) Availability of documentation

(3) Availability of additional information from the client

(4) Amount of papers that need to be read

(5) Time taken to hold a conference with the client (if necessary)

(6) The workload in the particular case, as well as other cases in my practice

(7) Timetables set by tribunals, the courts or the Planning Inspectorate
